Re: If you could introduce a rule change to the game what would it be
Don't know if this has been suggested, not likely i'm putting my tin hat on as i'm writing.

In Rugby league you are not allowed to deliberately play the ball against an opponent to go out of the field of play to gain advantage.

In a nutshell stop players playing the ball off the other team to gain a throw or goal kick. It would force the player to keep hold of the ball and play it. If they do deliberately play it off its a throw or corner to the other team.

I don't quite know but it certainly would involve lots of fit women getting their tits out on the touchline.

Agree fully with the time being kept independent from the referee & being visible to the fans, plus perhaps a klaxon going off at half time & full time to end play

The referees have enough on their plate already

Mikeing up referees would be beneficial

The technology exists to instantly tell electronically whether or not a player is offside. it should be used

I'm sick of seeing goals allowed or disallowed on the whim or the referee or his assistant

The ridiculous goal that Manu "scored" at the weekend & the pundits are promoting as goal of the season was clearly offside

Re: If you could introduce a rule change to the game what would it be
When play has been stopped for a player that is 'injured', that player should leave the field for a period of time equal to the duration of the stoppage.

Those stoppages would all but disappear, mark my words.

Piston,

I am not ashamed to say that I love that idea.

There was a statistic flying around a while ago that in the average 90 minute game (ie not cup ties with extra time, but including injury time which is intended to make up for stoppages leading to a full 90 minutes of play) the ball is actually only in play for 60-odd minutes.

Given players have become used to such things, it would be interesting to see what effect playing a genuine 90 minutes of action would have until they got used to it. I reckon we'd see a big increase in goals in the last 10-20 minutes!

Would probably never happen as clubs, the police, transport authorities etc like to have a pretty clear idea of when games will finish to within 5 to 10 minutes.

There's also the risk that in some circumstances it might encourage more time wasting, if for example a cynical yeam are losing in the latter stages of a game and have a player who is struggling to run off an injury, cramp etc, rather than thinking 'shit we'd better get on with this' might think 'oh well, if I take 5 minutes over this throw in then we still have as much time left and maybe we will be in a better position as he will have recovered'.

You'd probably have to simultaneously step up the punishing of excessive delays before you ended up with 3pm kick offs still going at 5.30.

Would perhaps end up with a lot of 9 goal thrillers with 9 men a side, but it would be entertaining!

female lino's & refs. When the fourth official judges they got a decision wrong they have to remove an item of clothing. No munters though

No woman should be involved in any form of punditry during, before or after a man's game. They haven't played and do not/can not understand the difference between mens' and womens' sport.

Correct; the referee should signal that the game has to stop, as should the clock.

Goalkeeper should be allowed to move at penalties, off thier line up to the 6 yard line, once the ref blows his whistle. The current rule is completely ignored already.

Re: If you could introduce a rule change to the game what would it be
This is an easy one for me and it is obviously an element of all American sports that has influenced my thinking.

There should be a fucking game clock that EVERYONE can see!!! The ref should have NOTHING to do with time fucking keeping! The way the FA hold on to this stone age concept of the ref keeping his eye on the clock and the game at the same time is beyond comprehension.

Get a time clock at each end of the stadium and have someone that is not on the pitch to be in charge of the stopping and starting of the game. I would go even further and stop the clock when the ball is out of play and only start the clock when the goalie boots it or the player throws in into play.

These changes would stop time wasting and also those last second goals that are scored in the 8th minute of 4 minutes of injury time!

Clear daylight between last defender and attacker to be offside.

Penalties given consistently for holding in the box

Yellows and then a Red for keepers wasting time.
